Development of an experimental technology laboratory, based upon the principles of MetaReciclagem.

== MetaReciclagem ==
The perspective of MetaReciclagem is one of treating technology not as finished devices, but instead means of information production that always ask for re-combination. This perspective aims at promoting a critical use of ICTs, in the sense of transform, re-use and re-signify information technology.

= Background =
MetaReciclagem as a concept of ICT appropriation is being developed in Brazil since 2002, at the beginning as part of the organized network Projeto Metá:Fora, afterwards as a de-centralized methodology adopted by at least one hundred people.
Since then, MetaReciclagem has developed projects in partnership with NGOs (Agente Cidadão) and municipalities (Santo André, São Paulo, Campinas),  influenced the implementation of projects such as GESAC (brasilian Ministry of Communication's Vsat / satellite internet access program) and Pontos de Cultura (brasilian Ministry of Culture's project that aims to create 600 multimedia labs throughout Brasil), as well as bringing an awful lot of members of other projects to collaborate.
At least six “Spores” - MetaReciclagem self-organized development laboratories – have been developed in different contexts. Another kind  of MetaReciclagem action is the ConecTAZ – permanent or temporary instances which benefit from metarecycled technology. We have collectively established countless ConecTAZes, ranging from the creation of more than a dozen independent telecenters to decisive participations in educational processes and events.
In 2003, MetaReciclagem has been grant a fellowship from the Waag/Sarai platform, and in 2005 two of its members spent two months in a residency in New Delhi, India. Still in 2005, MetaReciclagem got an honorable mention in APC's Prêmio Betinho de Comunicação.

= Concepts =
== Free knowledge ==
The the free software movement has provided a new, sustainable, paradigm for software production. The next question is in what extent can this new economics of knowledge be applied in other fields of cultural production. MetaReciclagem supports the perspective that knowledge should be free. Free as in freedom, as Richard Stallman puts, of course. In that sense, all the knowledge generated and documented in our projects is made available for others to re-combine it. A great amount of human culture is no more than remix over remix over remix.

== Open and self-organized ==
Every MetaReciclagem instance is an open space, organized upon locally negotiated rules. We decided long ago not to become a franchise, creative wise. That allows a constant recreation of the whole network itself. We are constantly faced with new, better ways to do whatever we want to.

== Re-appropriation ==
Perhaps the most important principle of MetaReciclagem is re-appropriation: no matter what the original purpose of the ICT is, we will put it in critical view and transform it. It can be turning some old computers into a cluster for video editing, creating an wi-fi antenna from a chips can or transforming a floppy drive into a computer-controlled car.

== Technology as craftsmanship ==
Information technology should not be seen as a set of magic boxes that work independently of us. What we propose is breaking the fear people usually have of handling with information technology. It's done by treating technology as nothing more than methodologies to manipulate information, and making a special effort on discovering and making available those technologies.

== Networked action ==
The difference between someone applying a de-constructive approach to ICTs and someone actually becoming a metarecycler is that the latter is constantly looking for conceptual and practical exchange with others across the network of people involved with MetaReciclagem.

= MetaReciclagem and Pistoletto Foundation =
Even though we already have some artists in our network, most of our projects in Brasil are formally related to digital inclusion issues. In such sense, symbolic experimentation happens mostly in our spare time, and we're somewhat stuck to a public image of MetaReciclagem as a set of processes about dealing with hardware. Formally, the subject of our experimentation is usually around economic issues. But the network and ourselves have the need for symbolic experimentation. Creating a lab along with Pistoletto Foundation could bring such improvement in a structured fashion, as well as providing a differentiated approach on ICTs for Pistoletto foundation.

== MetaReciclagem Media Lab ==

The lab is a full-featured MetaReciclagem spore focused on multimedia experimentation, narratives and language. An internet connection and power sockets are needed.

=== Multimedia workstations ===
Fast computers configured with free / open source software for multimedia production, authoring and distribution.

=== Burn station ===
A kiosk where one can download copylefted media, upload his/her production and burn Cds or DVDs with free music, video, texts, and software. It is connected to p2p trackers.

=== Toolkit ===
A set of tools for dealing with every kind of hardware.

=== Shelves ===
Shelves full of donated or second-handed equipment for experimentation.

=== Panels ===
Wall-mounted panels explain the basics of the MetaReciclagem process.

=== Technical Library ===
A small library provides quick answers to the most common questions about handling ICTs.

=== Desk ===
The desk in cross shape is the center of the MetaReciclagem lab, where all the experiments are made.

=== Devices ===
Equipment for further experimentation: gumstix (a palm-sized microprocessor), tripod and mini-DV camera, microphones, audio mixer and return monitors, video projector, scanner, laser monochromatic printer and inkjet color printer.
